Goals for fun!
the project
Summer 2018
I had the wonderful opportunity to visit some family friends in Rwanda, Faith and Roger Shaw. Since officially moving out of the Bay Area to Rwanda in 2010, they have since built up a sustainable agricultural farm, fish farm and business, a home for children needing a family, a petting zoo, tourist accommodations, a local flourishing school called Pioneer, and a Free Milk Program that gives local children a glass of milk in their school day.
While there, one spontaneous project our team and the children living there undertook were soccer goals. The kids loved soccer, or football as they call it, however, they did not have any goals. The balls would often be kicked off the grass area into bushes or roll down the path towards the farm. This would often result in flat balls after.
Thus, we needed soccer goals.
With resources limited, electricity spotty, drill bits scarce, and nails a fight to be found…we gathered whatever materials we could find around the farm and innovated our way to our goal.
By the end of my few week stay, 2 goals were constructed for the children at the home to use for play and the school to be used for P.E.
the materials
leftover crocodile net
mostly warped, weather beaten and termite infested leftover wood
the build
it takes creativity, a team, and a good attitude :)
the final & fun!
